<![CDATA[THROWN IN A FIT - Blog]]>Mon, 03 Feb 2025 07:46:05 -0800Weebly<![CDATA[Back from workshop and off to a running start for 2019....keep up if you can!]]>Mon, 28 Jan 2019 17:21:30 GMThttps://www.throwninafit.com/blog/back-from-workshop-and-off-to-a-running-start-for-2019keep-up-if-you-canWell I flew back from Tucson on Jan 19th totally exhausted and inspired.  My two weeks with Mary Susan Cate of Merry Arttoones Reality Check Studios was intense and inspiring.  She only made me cry once in the two weeks!  You'd have to be there but after the 8th time of starting over I was beginning to think this wasn't for me.  Mary and I came to an agreement in how best I learn and things got much better from there for both of us.  Just a note from someone who has taken lots of workshops....we all learn and teach differently so both need to be open to adjusting on the fly!

I have two, not yet complete sculptures, of a standing and sitting female in paper-clay.  I hope to complete work on them within the next month and then it will take probably 2-3 months for them to dry properly before firing.  Look for them possibly to appear at the Art Waddle in May!

Speaking of the Art Waddle, our 7th annual event will be held, as always, the second Saturday in May.  This year that is May 11th and the event is from 10-3 rain or shine.  Look for more details soon!

My hand-building classes are starting up for the winter session and it looks like my morning and afternoon Tuesday classes are full.  I have 2 openings for the Wednesday evening class if anyone is interested.  email me at mdesigns1@mac.com for more info.

In two weeks Gallery 195 will be having their annual strategic planning meeting so I will be posting soon after some happening things for the Gallery...in the meantime... stop by and see what is new for 2019 on the art floor.

So very hard to believe how quickly a year goes by now.  So much has happened just in the last 2 years with my chosen art form of clay. From opening a gallery in the downtown historic district of Boerne, TX, while continuing to expand my journey in clay through sculpture.  Two very exciting journeys will happen this year towards enriching a narrative sculpture component to my work.

The first happens in January as I leave for Tucson to study sculpture using stoneware paper clay with Merry Arttoones Reality Check Studios and the exuberant artist Mary Susan Cate.  She has several workshops each year so picking the one (actually two) I will be attending was difficult.  I chose the standing and sitting human figure workshop to improve my understanding of how to tell a story through the sculpture of the human form.  It is really going to challenge me but I'm very excited to get started.

The second was finding out on my birthday last October that I had been selected to attend a one month residency with international renowned narrative sculpture artist, Lisa Naples. I've not run across many opportunities for self-taught ceramic artists, so when this opportunity presented itself I found I couldn't resist at least applying....and I GOT ACCEPTED!  Don't know how many applied but truthfully, don't really care!  The fact that I was selected was very rewarding.

From my humble beginnings 12 years ago taking a wheel throwing class every Tuesday evening for 2 hours to being part owner of an art gallery, teaching hand-building and co-chairing the annual Art Waddle Boerne, a neighborhood art event in Boerne,  I've come a long way.  What I find hasn't been easy, is appreciating how far I've actually come and improved in my work.  I find my biggest strength is having no fear about trying new things....it seems to have served me well to this point, so don't really see a reason to change the formula....it keeps me on my toes for sure.
